Macaw Bungalows & Treehouses — Guest Information Guide

Welcome to Macaw Bungalows, your boutique jungle retreat on Isla Carenero.

You’re surrounded by palms, sea breeze, and a symphony of parrots — we want you to feel completely at home while soaking in every bit of it.

This guide covers the essentials for a smooth, comfortable stay — plus a few insider tips from the people who know and love this island best.

🏡

About Macaw Bungalows

What started as a creative dream has become a canopy-level escape inspired by nature, art, and adventure. Each treehouse and bungalow blends comfort with craftsmanship — hand-poured concrete, copper fixtures, and the soft rustle of the rainforest right outside your door.

We believe in barefoot luxury: everything you need, nothing that breaks the calm.

🕒

Check-In / Check-Out

  • Check-in: 4 PM – 12AM
  • Check-out: 11 AM

If you need flexibility, just ask — we’ll accommodate when possible. Luggage storage is available if your boat or flight leaves later in the day.

✈️ Arrival & Transfer to Macaw Bungalows

On arrival day, one of our Macaw Bungalows team members will meet you at the Bocas del Toro Airport (BOC) (4 minutes from the docks), assist with your luggage, and escort you to our private water taxi and over to the property on Isla Carenero. It is a very short taxi ride from the airport to the boat dock (about $5, will need to be paid directly to the taxi driver, who is not our employee). Once you arrive on Carenero, we’ll help you off the boat and show you directly to your treehouse or bungalow.

We’ll coordinate your arrival time and flight details with you the day before your stay so everything is smooth and easy.

If your flight or arrival time changes, just send us a quick message via text +1 310-993-7949 or email inquiries@macawbungalows.com or through the Airbnb app so we can adjust.

🔑

Your Treehouse or Bungalow

  • Please keep your key in the lockbox whenever you’re off exploring.
  • A wall safe is provided behind the bathroom sliding door for valuables.
  • Remember: the decks, railings, and stairs can be slippery after rain — hold onto handrails and take your time.

📶

Wi-Fi & Connectivity

Network: MacawBungalows

Password: staywild

Signal strength varies with the trees and weather — consider it part of the island experience. (We like to think it encourages hammock time.)

🚭

Smoking Policy

We’re a strictly non-smoking property.

No cigarettes, cigars, vaping, or marijuana are permitted inside any unit or anywhere on the grounds. Guests who wish to smoke may do so on the beach outside the property fence.

Thank you for helping us keep the air fresh and the jungle happy.

💧

Water & Sustainability

All our water is collected from rain and filtered on-site. Water is a precious resource on the island, so we kindly ask guests to help conserve it—short showers, turning off taps, and reusing towels when possible all make a difference.

🔌 Electricity & Energy use

Power on small islands is precious, and we do our best to use it responsibly. While many locations in the Bocas Archipelago rely on solar power, Macaw Bungalows is connected to the local electrical grid. Electricity here is still a limited resource, so we appreciate guests switching off fans, lights, and A/C when leaving the unit—it helps more than you might think.

🌴

House Rules & Courtesy

  • Quiet hours begin at 10 PM. Enjoy the sounds of the jungle instead of your playlist.
  • No outside guests without prior approval.
  • Please don’t take towels off property (they prefer to stay home).
  • No open flames or outdoor cooking.
  • Respect your neighbors — both human and feathered.

🪶

Treehouse Safety

The bridges and decks are part of the adventure. Use care when surfaces are wet, always hold the railings, and wear non-slip shoes if possible.

Macaw Bungalows & Treehouses isn’t responsible for injuries resulting from unsafe behavior or failure to follow posted guidance — so channel your inner explorer responsibly.

🌊

Getting Around & Island Tips

We’re located on Isla Carenero, just a quick 3-minute water-taxi ride from Bocas Town (Isla Colón). Any boat driver will know Macaw Bungalows — we’re right along the main Playita Carenero beach  (just past all the other stuff!) Go to one of the several the water-taxi stands in Bocas Town. (There is ‘The Carenero Dock’, ‘The  Bastimentos Dock’ & ‘The Valencia Dock’ - but it does not matter which one you choose) Tell the driver: “Playita Carenero / Macaw Bungalows” (past the old ‘Peter Kent dock’ and a few  properties past the very visible white dome property)

  • Cost: Typical fare is $2 per person during the day and about $3 at night (cash only; small bills are  best).
  • Ride Time: Typically about 3-4 minutes.
  • Water taxis run all day between Isla Carenero and Bocas Town - Typical fare is $2 per person during the day and about $3 at night (cash only; small bills are best). And you may call one of these water taxi drivers or you can simply flag down a passing water taxi (if they are not busy they will cone over to the beach and get you and it usually does not take too long as they are always looking in that direction when they pass if they are available)

Main number for water taxi dispatch: +507 760 9099

  • Groceries & ATMs are on Isla Colón — plan ahead before heading back to the island.
  • Local dining: There are so many excellent places for food and drinks - two of our very personal favorites are La Buga & Il Ultimate Refugio there is also Bibi's just down the beach from us (10 minute walk)
  • Activities: Snorkeling, paddle boarding, surf lessons, and island-hopping tours can be arranged — just ask Ely for recommendations.

🌅

The Chillin’ Macaw Café

Our café is the heart of the property — part gathering spot, part tropical indulgence, where you'll notice the music: a relaxed blend of ’70s and ’80s classics along with mellow contemporary favorites—familiar, feel-good songs that create a laid-back island atmosphere. We keep the soundtrack easygoing and conversational so guests can relax, unwind, and enjoy the rhythm of the sea and the jungle.

The café serves items such as:

  • Breakfast menu, Espresso, cappuccino, and classic coffee
  • Fresh crepes each morning
  • Smoothies and fruit blends
  • Sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, and afternoon snacks

Hours may vary with the season.
