How To Get To Bocas Del Toro

✈️ Getting to Bocas

Currently, guests arrive via short regional flights from Panama City to Isla Colón (Bocas del Toro), followed by a quick water taxi ride to Macaw Bungalows on Isla Carenero.

Panama has also announced construction of a new $50 million international airport on Isla Colón — a modern facility designed to welcome larger aircraft and direct flights from major hubs. Once complete, it will make travel to Bocas del Toro even more convenient for visitors from around the world.

Until then, we think the short island-hop is part of the adventure — your first taste of the laid-back rhythm that defines life in the archipelago. 🌴

🚤 Getting to Macaw Bungalows

• Water taxis are available at the main dock in Bocas Town.

• Tell the captain you’re going to Macaw Bungalows, Isla Carenero.

• Cost is usually around $1–2 per person.

Weather (What to Expect)

☀️ Weather — What to Expect

Bocas del Toro has that classic Caribbean rhythm — warm days, balmy nights, and just enough rain to keep the jungle lush and the flowers showing off. Temperatures hover around 80–86°F (27–30°C) year-round, so you can pack light and leave the sweaters at home.

Unlike many places, Bocas doesn’t have a sharp “dry” and “rainy” season. Instead, it moves in gentle waves — a few weeks of bright, breezy sunshine followed by a stretch of afternoon showers. Locals like to say “it rains to remind you you’re in the rainforest.”

  • Sunniest months: February–April and September–October — great for beach time, snorkeling, and photography.
  • Greener months: May–August and November–January — expect more showers, especially at night or early morning, but also calmer seas and incredible colors.
  • Ocean temps: Always inviting — around 82°F (28°C), ideal for swimming or paddleboarding any time of year.

Even when it rains, the storms pass quickly, and the air smells like hibiscus and sea salt. It’s part of the island’s charm — a little sun, a little rain, and a whole lot of magic. 🌴

Top Things To NOT Do

🚫

Top Things To NOT Do at Macaw Bungalows

We’re all for freedom, adventure, and good times — but a few things are definite “nope” territory.

Please help keep everyone (and the jungle) safe, happy, and sane by not doing any of the following:

🔥

1. Don’t Light Fires or Cook Outdoors

No open flames, candles, grills, or cooking equipment anywhere on the property. The Chillin’ Macaw Café handles all the deliciousness — you handle the relaxing.

🚭

2. Don’t Smoke — Anywhere on the Property

That includes vaping, cigars, marijuana, incense, or anything that burns. You may smoke only on the beach outside the property fence. We mean it — this rule keeps our wood structures (and your deposit) intact.

🧗

3. Don’t Treat the Treehouses Like a Jungle Gym

Yes, the suspension bridges and decks are strong — but they’re not playground equipment. No running, jumping, climbing railings, or swinging on ropes, Tarzan. Enjoy the view, use the handrails, and save your acrobatics for Instagram captions.

🌊

4. Don’t Dive or Jump From Decks

The treehouses aren’t overwater, but nearby docks and walkways are — and they’re for docking, not diving. The tides, coral, and currents can surprise you fast.

🔊

5. Don’t Bring the Party Home

Quiet hours begin at 10 PM. We love music, but the jungle soundtrack (frogs, crickets, and waves) does it better. Please keep voices and tunes low after dark.

🧍‍♀️

6. Don’t Invite Strangers In

For everyone’s safety, unregistered visitors are not allowed on the property. This includes friends met in town, tour guides, and that “cool guy with a boat.”

🍹

7. Don’t Overdo the Island Happy Hour

Bocas nightlife is legendary — but navigating docks and bridges after one too many rum punches is a bad idea. Drink water (lots of it) and save your balance for yoga class.

🐾

8. Don’t Bring Pets

We love animals — especially the wild ones. But no pets or service animals are allowed at the property. The jungle’s already full of colorful characters.

⚡

9. Don’t Waste Water or Power

We collect our water from the rain and generate much of our own energy. Please help conserve — short showers, lights off when not in use, and unplug chargers when you head out.

💬

10. Don’t Hesitate to Ask

If you’re unsure about something — whether it’s safe to walk to a certain beach at night, where to get a taxi, or how to store valuables — just ask Ely or JP. We’re happy to help, and we’ve probably seen it all before.

🌴

In Short

Be kind, be safe, and be smart — so you can spend your time here doing exactly what you came for: nothing but enjoy it.

Beaches please!

You’re in island paradise — and the beaches here don’t disappoint. Whether you’re after calm turquoise water for a lazy swim, rolling surf for a thrill, or a secluded stretch of sand to watch the sunset, Bocas del Toro has it all within a few minutes by boat.

Here are a few local favorites:

  1. Carenero Beach – Steps from Macaw Bungalows, perfect for a morning dip or a sunset stroll with your toes in the sand.
  2. Bluff Beach (Isla Colón) – Wild and beautiful, known for its powerful waves and golden sands. Great for long walks and photos.
  3. Starfish Beach – Calm, shallow waters and—you guessed it—starfish. Ideal for families or floating with a drink in hand.
  4. Red Frog Beach (Isla Bastimentos) – A postcard-perfect beach framed by jungle trails, beach bars, and the sound of distant howler monkeys.
  5. Wizard Beach – A hidden gem accessed through the jungle from Old Bank. Unspoiled and worth the short adventure.

☀️ Each has its own charm — from surfing and snorkeling to hammock naps and beachside cocktails.

Your Safety / Crime in Bocas

🛡️ Your Safety / Crime in Bocas

Bocas del Toro is generally a friendly and easy-going island community, but like anywhere that attracts travelers, a little awareness goes a long way.

Petty theft can occasionally happen in town or on the beaches — usually when bags or phones are left unattended. Violent crime is rare, and visitors who use basic common sense tend to have safe, memorable stays.

At Macaw Bungalows, your comfort and security are top priorities:

• Our property is fenced, well-lit, and managed by trusted local staff who live nearby.

• Each unit includes a wall safe for your passports, cash, and valuables.

• We work closely with local authorities and maintain strong relationships within the Carenero community.

A few simple tips:

• Keep valuables secured when you’re out exploring.

• Avoid walking alone late at night on empty roads or beaches.

• Use only licensed water taxis, especially after dark.

• Trust your instincts — if something feels off, step away.

Overall, Bocas del Toro remains a welcoming, relaxed destination where respect and awareness go hand in hand. We want you to feel safe, cared for, and free to enjoy every moment in paradise. 🌴
